Historically Meson San Cayetano was the source of
a quarter of the world's silver and gold. Located in one of the
world's most romantic locales, Meson San Cayetano
is a historic 18th century villa overlooking the colonial town of
Guanajuato. The villa was constructed by the founder of Mexico's
fabulous silver and gold bonanza, El Conde de Obregon y Alcocer,
as the headquarters of the ancient Valenciana Mine.
In the 60's the villa was restored with the help of Italian sculptor
Georgio Belloli and architect Manuel Parra. More recently, it was
featured in an article on the artist Michael Tracy in the March
1994 issue of "Harper's Bazaar" (pg. 225. . . ). Sr. Tracy
is the interior designer and has contributed, along with other artists,
much of the pre-Columbian, colonial and modern art that makes Meson
San Cayetano meaningful.
The villa itself is an archetypal example of highland colonial architecture.
Immense vaulted ceilings, Moorish conches and wrought stone arches
all adorn the grand sala. The sky-lit kitchen and guest bathroom
allow for light to contrast the solid, 18th century walls. All other
rooms open onto a lush courtyard garden, surrounded by an arched
veranda. The garden is an extension of the interior living space,
creating both privacy and access to the exceptional climate. The
villa's beauty of architectural proportion and garden light are
a harmony of the mind.
Many of the best things to do here are simple: watch hummingbirds,
paint, write, take Spanish lessons, visit historic sites/museums,
grill, hammock, walk the callejons, symphony, dance, etc. . . .
